Unaccompanied by Javier Zamora

Unaccompanied by Javier Zamora

Unaccompanied is a collection of 44 free verse and prose poems divided into four unnamed sections. The poems chronical Zamora’s 4000-mile journey across many borders, from El Salvador to the United States, unaccompanied, at nine years old. The poems deal with diaspora and a sort of related dysmorphia that arises from leaving behind a homeland and arriving in a land that can never be home. Though the poems are not overtly political, choosing to focus on the journey and its implications instead, but there can be no journey such as this without politics; those of El Salvador, those of the States, and those of the individuals Zamora meets in these poems along the way. Everyone has an agenda and are willing to cross boundaries to fulfill their desires in both senses of the phrase.

Many of the poems in this collection are bilingual and heavily influenced and informed by familial connections.
