Life Studies for the Union Dead by Robert Lowell

Originally published as two volumes, Life Studies & For the Union Dead by Robert Lowell explores a sense of place, history, and literature through its poems. The poems are often rooted in Massachusetts locations, including "The Public Garden," which is based on Boston's famous locale. In it, he writes "you lead me to our stamping ground...Remember summer? Bubbles filled/the fountain, and we splashed. We drowned/in Eden" (26-27).

Written in a variety of forms, Lowell takes inspiration from other authors, at one point even taking lines from a short story by Elizabeth Bishop and turning it into a poem.
