The Book of the Dead by Muriel Rukeyser and an introduction by Catherine Venerable Moore
The first half of this book is the investigative introduction of Catherine Venerable Moore into Muriel Rukeyser, the Hawk’s Nest Tunnel disaster in Gauley Bridge, WV 1931, and the connection between Rukeyser and the disaster. Next is a “list” of the dead from the disaster, it doesn’t do the true disaster justice but does highlight the racism involved in the silencing of the disaster. The Book of the Dead by Muriel Rukeyser is the second part of this book. This collection of poems themselves are an investigation of the environmental disaster and the racism in the silencing. They include narrative, quotes, testimony, interviews (dialog), and reportage.
