Patient. by
Bettina Judd is a collection of poetry set in the time of American slavery and imagined
through the eyes of black slaves, Anarcha Wescott, Betsey Harris, Lucey
Zimmerman, and many others who were the subject of experiments that have
contributed to the advancement of modern gynecology.
The title of the collection allows Judd play with the double
meaning of the word “patient” to show both the technical, emotionless science
with which these women were seen and treated in juxtaposition with their
courage and resilience.
The play on the word “patient” also allows Judd to play with
form in ways that reenact or imitate conversations with doctors, mathematic
formulas, checklists, etc.
