Tocqueville by Khaled Mattawa
These poems chronical American social and cultural hierarchies, examining xenophobia and American spheres of influence. There are twelve freeverse poems ranging in length from a page to 20 pages. Some of the poems are formally explosive and sprawling while others look like form poems but are simply in regular stanzas, in comparison. One notable poetic move is the use of grids to explore language and power. In this way, the book examines hierarchies of the page in addition to society.
Notes list verifying influences; the language used includes: response to, borrowed from, draws on, alludes to, excerpts from, and incorporates. Names of books, articles, magazines, and authors are included.
